The 1892 Columbian Half Dollar Coin was the first U.S. Commemorative coin minted both in 1892 and 1893. It was issued to raise money for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and to mark the quadcentennial of the first voyage to the Americans of Christopher Columbus. These coins are also the first to depict a historical person on U.S. coinage. Minted with silver these coins have .36169 troy ounces and are 30.61mm in diameter.
