What's a 1979-S Susan B. Anthony dollar worth?
The 1979-S is the San Francisco proof, and there are two varieties — and the difference matters. The common Type 1 "Filled S" (a blobby, partially filled mint mark) is worth about $5–$12 in proof grades. The scarce Type 2 "Clear S" — only roughly 15–20% of 1979 proofs, made after the mint replaced a worn punch — is the one to look for: about $35 in PR68, $65 in PR69, and up to ~$110 in PR70.
How to tell them apart: look closely at the "S" mint mark. A clear, well-defined S is the valuable Type 2; a soft, filled-in S is Type 1.
The Anthony dollar ran only 1979–1981 and 1999, and the small-dollar series is a quick, affordable set to complete — the 1979-S Type 2 is one of its few real condition rarities.
