The 1857 Flying Eagle is a first-year-of-issue type coin and one of the first small cents struck for circulation. A worn example grades around Good-4 at roughly $27–$30, a Very Fine coin runs about $70, and uncirculated pieces start near $225, climbing past $650 in higher Mint State. Struck in a copper-nickel alloy, these cents are thicker and paler than the bronze Indian Head cents that followed.
